JOHOR BARU: Newly-elected Machap assemblyman Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi was sworn in as the new Johor Menteri Besar today.
The great-grandson of Umno founder Datuk Onn Jaafar becomes the 19th Johor chief executive and succeeds Datuk Hasni Mohammad.
The swearing-in ceremony was held at Istana Bukit Serene at 3pm in front of Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar.
Also present was the Tunku Mahkota Johor Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim and Hasni, who is the Johor Barisan Nasional chairman.
Onn Hafiz was previously the state Tourism, Youth and Sports executive committee chairman.
In the 14th General Election, he contested and won the Layang-layang state seat before he won the Machap seat in the recently concluded state election.
Onn Hafiz, a UK-trained accountant, is also the nephew of Senior Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein.
He is also the great-great-grandson of Johor's first Menteri Besar Datuk Jaafar Muhammad, whose sons Abdullah, Mustapha and Onn were also former Menteri Besar of Johor.
He is the Simpang Renggam Umno vice chief and an Umno Youth Exco member.
In a posting on his Facebook page, Onn Hafiz expressed his gratitude to Hasni for his sacrifices, help, commitment and leadership in stabilising Johor.
"Hasni's sacrifice in providing the opportunity for young leaders to helm Johor not only showed his big heart and statesmanship but also show his confidence in the role and ability of the young in helming Johor.
"Insya-Allah, I will always seek advice from Hasni, who is more experienced than me. May the combination of the experienced and the energy and idealism of the young will strengthen and develop the state so that it will continue to move forward," said Onn Hafiz.
He also urged Bangsa Johor, regardless of religion, race or background to unite and be with him to continue to develop the state.
