GEORGE TOWN: Ramadan bazaars and pasar tani will be allowed to operate within the compounds of mosques and surau statewide following the country's transition to the endemic phase from April 1.
Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Ahmad Zakiyuddin Abdul Rahman said both the Ramadan bazaars and pasar tani would be allowed to operate under strict compliance of the standard operating procedures (SOP).
He said the move was aimed at stimulating the economy.
"Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, there were mosques and surau which allow Ramadan bazaars and pasar tani within their compounds during the fasting month. However, all that was stopped during the pandemic to stop its spread of Covid-19 .
"However, during the forthcoming fasting month, we will allow them under strict compliance of the SOP.
"Besides making it easier for the people to obtain the basic necessities, this is also to stimulate the economy," he said today.
Meanwhile, Ahmad Zakiyuddin said "takbir raya" and house-to-house "takbir" would also be allowed.
"Besides that, 'solat jenazah' and visits to the grave will also be allowed.
"All activities in conjunction with the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration, including Hari Raya prayers and celebration are also allowed.
"Tazkirah during tarawih prayers is allowed but limited to 10 minutes. Qiyamullail and sermons at all mosques and surau are also allowed," he added, noting that for tarawih prayers, eight rakaat are allowed while 20 rakaat are encouraged.
"As for children aged 12 and below, they will be allowed but must be accompanied by a fully vaccinated parent or guardian.
According to Ahmad Zakiyuddin, who is also the Penang Islamic Religious Council (MAINPP) president, this latest decision takes effect from "solat subuh" on April 1 until a new directive is issued.
It is subjected to changes from time to time based on directive from the government or until a period when the situation is declared safe by the government.
