MySejahtera data belongs to government, check-ins deleted after 3 months

KUALA LUMPUR: The Dewan Negara was told today that all data and information obtained using the MySejahtera application are wholly-owned by the Malaysian government.

Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, in assuring the security of MySejahtera's database, said information obtained through the app was only for the purposes of mitigating the spread of Covid-19.

He added that the usage and the management of MySejahtera data was subject to the Prevention and Control of Infectious Disease Act 1988 and the Medical Act 1971.

"All records (MySejahtera check-ins) will be permanently removed using 'hard delete' (process) after 90 days and not seven years as claimed out there.

"This means that the information (MySejahtera check-ins) cannot be recovered after the hard deleting process," said Khairy in his winding-up speech on an emergency motion on the controversy surrounding the safety of the people's personal data in the MySejahtera application.

He also stressed that daily data transaction from the MySejahtera application stored on the cloud network could only be used for the purpose of the application as well as Covid-19 prevention support such as vaccination models.

"And the server is located at AIMS Data Centre here and not in other countries," he said.

Khairy also stressed that the ownership of the MySejahtera application including all 15 modules developed for the application belonged to the ministry.

"I want to explain here the issues related to the ownership (of the MySejahtera) application.

"From the brand to the application, all 15 modules (developed for the app) including its source code belong to the ministry.

"The (developer) company is only involved in the operation of the platform.

"And when we download the app from the App Store and Google Play, we can see that MySejahtera belongs to the Government of Malaysia," he said.

He also said the usage of the MySejahtera application should be maintained since the app had been vital in the country's Covid-19 management.

"The ministry is of the view that there is still a need to continue using the application even when the country is transitioning into endemicity," he said.
