KUANTAN: The parents of a 2-year-old boy who died in the fire incident in Jalan Permatang Badak Perdana 2 here today are among four people being treated at the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital's intensive care unit (ICU).
Mohd Saupi Mat Daud, 37, and his 31-year-old wife Nurolzila Mohd Nor, are warded at the hospital's ICU for burn injuries along with Saupi's sister Siti Shaida Mat Daud, 32, and Saupi's friend Mohd Azwan Kali, 35.
Saupi's 2-year-old son Aisliki perished in the 3.10am fire incident which razed two houses.
Kuantan police chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Mohd Zahari Wan Busu said four other victims including an 8-month-old infant escaped with light injuries.
"The fire incident involved three semi-detached homes and none of the victims from the third house was injured. The four who sustained light injuries occupied the first unit while the second unit was occupied by Aisliki along with four others who are currently in the ICU.
"Investigations revealed the fire started from the second house before it spread to the first house. A witness claimed the fire began in the living room followed by explosions," he said, adding that the Fire and Rescue Department were still investigating the cause of the fire.
Meanwhile, Wan Zahari said the post-mortem report on Aisliki was completed about 2pm and the case was being investigated as sudden death.
Earlier, it was reported that the fire incident had also razed three cars and two motorcycles which were parked in the vicinity.
Pahang Fire and Rescue Department director Datuk Dr Wan Mohammad Zaidi Wan Isa, who visited the scene, said a massive explosion had caused the fire and the department was investigating the cause.
Speculation is rife that the powerful blast which rocked the entire neighbourhood and shattered window panes of several houses in the vicinity was caused by fireworks.
Several videos of the fire incident followed by the sounds of fireworks exploding had been circulating on social media and pieces of fireworks were even spotted on the grass outside the house.
