Malaysia targeting 40 per cent renewable energy by 2035

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia plans to be equipped with 40 per cent renewable energy (RE) by the year 2035.

The Energy and Natural Resources Ministry (KeTSA) deputy minister Datuk Ali Biju said that currently the RE installation had reached 23 per cent.

He said Malaysia's transition of electricity supply system towards a low carbon energy system was guided by the Malaysia Renewable Energy Roadmap (MyRER) document.

"The roadmap among others focuses on increasing the share of four key RE resources namely solar, biomass, biogas and hydro, within Malaysia's electricity supply system, through a balanced yet sustainable approach.

"This clean energy transition for the power sector will create an accumulated direct investment of RM53billion or USD12billion while creating 47,000 job opportunities and 60 per cent carbon intensity reduction in 2035," he said in his speech today.

He said this during the 2nd Annual Clean Power and New Energy Forum, themed Shaping the Future of Energy in Asia.

Also present were Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) president and chief executive officer Datuk Baharin Din, Sarawak Energy group chief operating officer (COO) James Ung, and Petronas Gas Berhad independent non-executive director Datuk Abdul Razak Majid.

Ali said that energy sector plays an important role in achieving government's development goals.
