KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Malaya (UM) has lodged a police report following a video shared on social media showing a student, who is also a PhD candidate, claiming his research had been stolen by his supervisor.
UM's Corporate Communications Office in a statement said the police report made in Brickfields was aimed at denying the allegations made by the 34-year-old student from Yemen.
The university also said it will be reviewing appropriate legal action against the international student.
"It is the university's policy that research results and scientific results become the property of the university.
"However, the university had given the resources and opportunity for the candidate to complete his PhD including an extension of up to three semesters after the 12-semester maximum deadline with fees sponsored by the faculty," it said in a statement.
UM added that it held several counselling sessions and appointed additional supervisors to help the candidate involved.
However, the university said the candidate was still unable to complete his studies within the given extension period.
Earlier, the Phd candidate known as Abbod Ali Mohammed Saeed had lodged a police report on Monday claiming two of his supervisors had used his research materials for their own commercial benefit.
Meanwhile, Brickfields police chief Assistant Commissioner Amihizam Abdul Shukor confirmed a report had been lodged on the issue.
"There is a report, but the case has been referred to Cheras," he said.
