KUALA LUMPUR: The concern raised by Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Muizzudin Shah over the dangerous level of corruption in Malaysia shows that the country has yet to embrace accountability.
Transparency International-Malaysia (TI-M) president Dr Muhammad Mohan said when there is no culture of accountability, corruption is bound to keep happening.
"All the issues as mentioned by Sultan Nazrin were accurate, and the various instances repeatedly noted in the Auditor General's Report on the leakages, waste and loss of taxpayers' money were recurring issues.
"The same goes with the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) report on the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) project worth RM9 billion, with RM6.083 billion paid despite it yet to be completed," he said in a statement.
Earlier today, Sultan Nazrin, at the launch of the book "Korupsi dan Kemunafikan dalam Politik Melayu; Perlunya Disegerakan Transformasi Moral Etika" by Professor Emeritus Tan Sri Dr Mohd Kamal Hassan said the corruption level in Malaysia was at an undeniably dangerous level.
Mohan said Sultan Nazrin's message should be taken as a wake-up call, especially by the country's leaders, to take drastic action to curb corruption.
"TI-M would like to urge all parties, from political leaders, civil servants, leaders in the private sector and the people in general to take this matter seriously."
