KUDAT: The National Registration Department (NRD) has handed over the birth and death record books to the Kerakit police station in Banggi island here.
This followed an announcement on the matter by caretaker Home Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin during a visit to the island on Oct 1.
The residents on the island can now make their birth and death reports at the police station without having to travel by ferry to the NRD office in Kudat, the department said in a statement.
NRD hoped that the local community could now submit their birth notifications within 42 days as stipulated in the Sabah Birth and Death Registration Ordinance (Sabah Cap 123).
The facility provided at the police station aims to reduce the rate of late birth registration.
"Subsequently, the registration process will be carried out by the department through its 'Menyemai Kasih Rakyat (Mekar) programme', which is carried out periodically," NRD said.
Besides the Karakit police station, 13 General Operations Force control posts across Sabah also provide the facility.
