GE15: Istana Negara wants parties to submit finalised coalitions and PM candidate by 2pm tomorrow

KUALA LUMPUR: Political and coalition party chiefs will have to present to Istana Negara their respectively agreed coalitions, as well as the name of a Dewan Rakyat member as the prime ministerial candidate, before 2pm tomorrow.

Istana Negara Comptroller of the Royal Household Datuk Seri Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin said they would be asked to do so by Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Azhar Azizan Harun.

Ahmad Fadil said this was in line with Article 40(2) (a) and Article 43(2)(a) of the Federal Constitution that the consent and decision by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah on the formation of a new government and the appointment of a Prime Minister, through a process that had already been explained, is final.

"The King advises the rakyat and the chief of political parties to agree and respect the democratic process and accept the decision of the 15th General Election calmly and openly in the interest of the country's integrity as the nation is an inheritance where leaders are the trustees," he said in a statement.

The palace, he said, had received the official GE15 results from the Election Commission chairman Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh at 1.15pm today.

Ahmad Fadil said the document had clearly shown that no political parties had successfully secured a simple majority in parliament to form a new government.

"Following that, with the decree of the King, the palace had requested the cooperation of Azhar to get political and coalition parties chiefs that has the most number of seats to inform Istana Negara on the agreed political parties or coalitions for the formation of the new government post GE15," he said.

He added that the King also reminded that the country needed a government that was stable, accountable and of integrity for the benefit of the people and the agenda of the country's wellbeing.

"The King has asked the people to pray for the formation process of the new government to be eased and to go smoothly for the sake of the country's importance and prosperity.

"He also asked that Malaysians pray that the country will be blessed and protected from any form of disaster," said Ahmad Fadil.
