KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 15 zakat recipients or asnaf have been selected to participate in the 'Laman Cendawan Asnaf' programme introduced by the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) last November to generate income through the agriculture sector.
MAIWP chairman Tan Sri Dr Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahman said the asnaf group from Desa Tun Razak People's Housing Project (PPR) had planted oyster mushrooms for the programme.
"This is MAIWP's contribution in supporting the efforts of the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry to strengthen the country's food security," he told reporters after launching the programme at Zaid bin Thabit Mosque here today.
He said each participant was given a mushroom house, measuring 4.5 metres x 6 metres, located near their housing area, which can house five thousand mushroom blocks.
"Participants are expected to receive a return of RM6,000 per month," he said.
He also said that MAIWP had allocated RM547,500 for the entire programme with the strategic cooperation of Yayasan Al-Hikmah which will monitor the programme for a year to ensure participants were given training and guidance on mushroom farming.
Abdul Aziz said this year, eight farming projects such as chilli, eggplant and mushroom had been implemented throughout the federal territory under the programme while 19 more farming projects would be carried out next year. – BERNAMA
