Batang Kali landslide: "Let's pray he recovers soon," say Fire and Rescue Dept as Selangor chief suffers stroke, exhaustion

KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor Fire and Rescue Department director Datuk Norazam Khamis is a familiar face to media personnel covering the Batang Kali landslide tragedy.

He has been at the Father's Organic Farm, the site of the tragedy from Day One, spearheading search and rescue operations, working tirelessly.

While his men worked on SAR operations on a rotational basis, Norazam could be seen walking around at all times of the day and night, scouting the area and discussing rescue strategies.

That has taken its toll on him. Norazam was admitted to Selayang Hospital today having suffered from exhaustion and a minor stroke.

The department said in a statement today he is reported to be in stable condition.

"The rescue efforts will still continue. Let us pray that he recovers soon," it said.

The SAR operation is still ongoing to locate the remaining nine victims believed to be buried there after 450,000 cubic metres of earth came down towards campsites below about 2am on Friday.

So far, 24 people have died in the incident.
