Ample supply of chicken eggs in the market

GEORGE TOWN: The supply of chicken eggs in Penang has recovered to around 70 per cent and is sufficient to meet the high demand of consumers, including during the Christmas season.

The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry's Penang director S. Jegan said the supply of chicken eggs, imported from India, which have been in the market here, was expected to balance the current supply shortage of local chicken eggs.

"The supply of chicken eggs is currently sufficient. It has recovered to about 70 per cent of normal conditions and it is sufficient for this festive season.

"Through our survey, on the wholesalers' side, they are getting eggs supply as usual.

"However, there are some retailers who experience supply disruptions due to other factors," he said after a walkabout at the Sam Groceria in Strait's Quay here today.

Earlier, Jegan monitored the implementation of the state-level Maximum Price Scheme for the 2022 Christmas Season in the supermarket.

Also present was state Trade, Industry and Entrepreneur Development Committee chairman Datuk Abdul Halim Hussain.

According to Jegan, via the monitoring of the chicken eggs supply in the market, they also found that all grades of chicken eggs, namely A, B and C, are in the market and supplies are sent to the market at least twice a week.

"It is up to the consumers to buy eggs according to the grade they want at the moment because from a supply point of view, there is no problem," he added.

Meantime, Jegan said from January to Dec 22, the state KPDN had inspected 53,109 premises throughout the state and actions had been taken in 733 cases.

"The total amount of the seizure was RM2.46 million and the compound amount was RM215,900.

"In terms of complaints on the supply of goods and price issues, from January to Dec 22, the total number of complaints received was 1,618, in which 458 were related to the price of goods and services, 57 related to the supply of controlled goods and the remaining 1,103 were related to other complaints," he said.

Six types of goods have been gazetted for the implementation of the 2022 Christmas Festival Maximum Price Scheme. Among the items are boned imported boned mutton, tomatoes and green bell peppers.
