The body of the last victim found in a sleeping bag

BATANG KALI: The body of the last victim of the deadly Batang Kali landslide was found in a sleeping bag at 4.53pm today.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department deputy director Wan Md Razali Wan Md Ismail said one of the department's personnel found fluid flowing at a bank of earth.

"The personnel suspected it was body fluid.

"Upon digging, a sleeping bag was found with the last victim in it," he told reporters at the site today.

Wan Md Razali said out of 31 victims, 20 bodies were found in Sector A, one in Sector B and 10 bodies in Sector C.

Hulu Selangor police chief Superintendent Suffian Abdullah said the body was unearthed in a sleeping bag found near the bank of earth in Sector A of the area.

"The sleeping bag was found in a 1.5-metre depth of the four-metre bank.

"The body of a male, aged between 7 and 12 years, was found in the sleeping bag, still perfect but starting to decompose," he said.

It was previously reported that the last victim, who then still missing, was identified as Eng Shao Qi, a Year 5 student of SJK(C) Mun Choong.

The school's parent-teacher association head U Chin Ong said the boy was the son of the canteen operator at the school.

The landslide also took the lives of the boy's father, identified as Gary Eng, and sister.

Meanwhile, Suffian said the SAR operation would continue despite the discovery of the last body today.

"The SAR operation will continue for flushing and investigation at the site.

"If there is no latest development, maybe tomorrow we will decide."

He also thanked all the agencies that took part in the SAR operation, as well as Malaysians for their prayers.

Earlier today, Selangor Fire and Rescue Department director Datuk Norazam Khamis, in a statement, said the operation at ground zero involved 80 personnel from the department, the armed forces, Civil Defence Force, Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance, Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (Smart) and the Department of Survey and Mapping Malaysia (Jupem).

It was also assisted by 10 dogs from the tracker dog unit (K9) and nine excavators with the focus on Sector A.

A total of 92 victims were involved in the incident that occurred on Dec 16, which saw 61 survivors.
