Frontline fireman who took part in Batang Kali landslide rescue efforts dies

KUALA LUMPUR: Rawang Fire and Rescue Department station chief Abd Aziz Usoff who took part in the Search And Rescue (SAR) operations for the landslide tragedy at the Father's Organic Farm campsite in Batang Kali on Dec 16 has died from a heart attack on Wednesday.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department director Datuk Norazam Khamis said that Abd Aziz passed away at around 7.55am at the age of 49.

"Abd Aziz was among the frontline officers during the recent SAR operations at Batang Kali.

"In fact, he was among the first to arrive on location at the scene of the landslide even though the tragedy happened in an area that was not under his care and responsibility.

"He had served the department for about 15 years, and I can tell you that he was a very dedicated, responsible and committed towards his duty as a fireman. His loss will be felt and it will be difficult to replace such an outstanding officer," he said when contacted by Berita Harian yesterday.

Norazam said that Abd Aziz remains were brought to Hospital Kuala Lumpur for post-mortem before being brought to Masjid Jamek Nurul Iman in Rawang.

"He was buried at 9.30pm on Wednesday night at the Masjid Al-Ittihad Muslim Cemetery in Sungai Kob, Karangan, Kulim, Kedah.

"Abd Aziz who hailed from Kampung Banggol Penyegat, Karangan leaves behind wife Siti Mardhiah Nayan@Ahmad and four sons," he said.
