PUTRAJAYA: Some 53,000 people participated in the Walk For Peace programme today involving eight locations nationwide.
They are Anjung Floria Putrajaya, Stadium Hang Jebat Alor Gajah in Melaka, Kompleks Sukan Taiping in Perak, Vision Park Bertam in Penang, Stadium Kuala Selangor and Stadium Sungai Besar Sabak Bernam in Selangor; Mini Stadium Kijang Mas Kota Baru in Kelantan and Stadium Gong Badak Kuala Terengganu in Terengganu.
International Association of Educators for World Peace (IAEWP) Malaysia chancellor Syed Araniri Syed Ahmad Al Idrus said the programme was held in conjunction with the United Nation's 2023 Day of Peace.
He said it was aimed at providing peace education to public.
"We want to promote peace and harmony between religions and races. Educating people to maintain unity and tolerance on religious and racial issues. In Malaysia, peace must be based on the principles of Rukun Negara.
"Free the world from war and create a healthy and peaceful environment. The reception was very encouraging and today alone, (the event) attracted 53,000 participants in eight places, including 5,400 people in Putrajaya alone," he said today.
He said the Walk For Peace in Malaysia began on Sept 21, 2019, and continued to early 2020, before it was put on hold due to Covid-19 pandemic.
IAEWP is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) under the United Nations.
