Pahang's flood situation improving, Kuantan remains affected

KUANTAN: The state capital remains the only flood-hit district in Pahang with 2,188 evacuees. The relief centres in Pekan were closed at noon today.

Up to noon, the number of flood victims at 13 flood relief centres in Kuantan dropped to 2,188 people from 666 families compared with 5,053 people yesterday.

A state Civil Defence Force spokesman said the four relief centres in Pekan, which had 110 evacuees yesterday, would be closed in stages today.

"Clear skies yesterday allowed the floodwaters in Pekan to recede, and the victims were allowed to return home today.

"Kuantan remains the only district hit by floods, but since the weather has improved, more evacuees will be allowed to return home today.

"Since the rain has stopped, the water levels in major rivers in Pahang are receding .

"Only two rivers, Sungai Pahang in Pekan and Sungai Keratong in Rompin, remain above the danger level."

Kuantan was hit by floods on Feb 6 following continuous heavy rain over 24 hours that saw certain parts of Pekan inundated the same evening. At the height of the floods, more than 5,000 people in both districts were evacuated.
