2 mudslides identified along Jalan Kuala Lumpur - Bentong, road remains closed

BENTONG: Continuous heavy rain has led to mudslides at several locations along the Jalan Kuala Lumpur - Bentong old road, causing the road to be temporarily closed.

Bentong District Police chief Superintendent Zaiham Mohd Kahar, said so far at least two mudslides have been identified along the stretch, both measuring about 50 metres long.

"The first mudslide occurred about 100 metres from the Janda Baik turning and the second one about 1.5 kilometres away.

"The width and height of the mudslides has yet to be determined due to weather and safety concerns but efforts are underway," he said.

Zaiham said the road is temporarily closed to all vehicles travelling from Genting Sempah to Janda Baik but alternatively motorists could use the E8 KL-Karak Highway - Bukit Tinggi interchange to pass through.

The road contractors from Roadcare (M) Sdn Bhd have carried out preliminary checks at the sites and found that soil erosion had damaged the road.

"There are also fallen rocks and soil on the road. But due to continuous water flowing at the site, the team's damage assessment works have been hampered," Zaiham said.

He advised motorists to avoid the affected roads and to use the alternative route to get to their destinations.

Meanwhile, a few villages located on the highlands have also been affected by the mudfloods and water surge.

So far the situation is under control and no evacuation order has been issued.

Authorities including the fire and rescue department and civil defence department are closely monitoring the situation on the ground.
