PM: Gov't spent RM1.6m on ministers' official cars in the last three years

KUALA LUMPUR: The government spent RM1.6 million to maintain and repair official vehicles of federal ministers between 2020 and last year, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Anwar, who is also finance minister, said the vehicle maintenance cost in 2020, during the administration of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, totalled RM672,000, while in 2021 and 2022, the cost totalled RM478,991.50 and RM450,690.66 respectively.

"The total cost of maintaining and repairing official vehicles of federal ministers is RM1,601,682.16," said Anwar in a written reply in the Dewan Rakyat.

He was replying to a question from Chong Zhemin (DAP-Kampar) who wants details on the cost of maintaining all ministers' official vehicles from 2020 to 2022.

In 2020, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was prime minister until Feb 24. He was then replaced by Muhyiddin, who took office on March 1, 2020, and served until August 2021. Muhyiddin was replaced by Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaacob.

Muhyiddin's cabinet consisted of 32 ministers and 38 deputy ministers.

Anwar said ministers were provided with Toyota Vellfire 2.5L beginning April 2021 to replace the Proton Perdana 2.4L which was discontinued.

He said the government had paid monthly leasing cost which included the leasing, maintenance and repair cost for each vehicle.
