Review electricity subsidy for T20

KUALA LUMPUR: The electricity subsidy for the T20 group must be reviewed because the group can afford to pay a more competitive tariff, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said Malaysia must move to targeted electricity subsidies.

"In countries with no electricity subsidy including Singapore, the tariff is driven by market forces. Subsidies are given but these are targeted.

"Here, we have the Imbalance Cost Pass-Through (ICPT) to set the electricity tariff.

"We still maintain the same rate for domestic users, including those in the T20 group. That is one thing that needs to be reviewed.

"However, for the M40 and B40 groups, I agree that we need to protect them," he said at the winding-up of the debate on the motion of thanks on the royal address at the Dewan Rakyat.

In another development, Nik Nazmi said the climate change bill would not be tabled in Parliament this year.

It will take another two to three years to be developed.

Nik Nazmi said the ministry was in the early stages of developing the legislation.

"It is expected to take between two and three years to be completed.

"The bill seeks to adopt a whole nation approach and we will have engagement with relevant stakeholders."
