Student group backs PM's call to end education subsidies for wealthy families

GEORGE TOWN: The Federation of Peninsular Malay Students (GPMS) says it welcomes Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's proposal to end education subsidies for children of wealthy families at public higher education institutions (IPTA) and redirect them to the B40 group.

GPMS vice president Muhammad Danial Alimin said the move aligns with the government's principles of social justice and moral responsibility.

"We support Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir's statement on this, pending Cabinet approval."

He said that current broad-based subsidies should be more targeted, ensuring B40 and parts of the M40 groups benefit more equitably.

Danial added that redirecting savings from these subsidies would aid those in genuine need, providing low-income groups better access to higher education.

"The funds could enhance learning facilities, scholarships, and financial aid, improving social mobility for B40 students," he said.

He backed the prime minister's suggestion that the T20 group assume greater responsibility, saying it would reduce funding imbalances and allow more efficient allocation.

"The affluent should not exploit subsidies meant for the needy. This principle fosters a fairer, more harmonious society."

GPMS said that it hopes these initiatives will strengthen the national education system and ensure equitable access for all.
