PUTRAJAYA: The government's plan to set a two-term limit on the prime minister's tenure in office will be presented to the cabinet soon, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman said today.
"A fine-tuned policy paper on the Prime Minister's 10-year tenure limit will soon be presented to the cabinet for a decision," she said in a statement.
Azalina said while it would take time to be fully realised, the tenure limit was one of the reforms the government was committed to fulfil.
She said the Legal Affairs Division values feedback from all Malaysians in their endeavour for continuous improvement and they are determined to bring changes to reforms that were identified as low hanging fruits as quickly as possible.
Among them are the Political Funding Bill, which Azalina said will be referred to the relevant Parliamentary Special Select Committee (PSSC) to carry out proper engagement with members of parliament on the Bill.
As for the separation of functions of the Attorney-General and Public Prosecutor (AG/PP), Azalina said once the Royal Commission of Inquiry was approved by cabinet, they would look into the matter as one of the term of references.
On the number of PSSCs, Azalina said the Selection Committee had met to evaluate the number of select committees which will be finalised soon and a subsequent announcement would be made by the Dewan Rakyat Speaker.
Azalina said there were numerous layers of protocol and clearances that the division would have to undergo to implement these reforms.
"The government would like to assure all stakeholders that with your support and with the support of all agencies in the unity government, we will do our best to see these reforms through," she said.
