GEORGE TOWN: Penang Island City Council (MBPP) secretary Datuk A. Rajendran has been appointed mayor of the city council, making him the first ethnic Indian to be appointed to such a post in Malaysia.
He will replace Datuk Yew Tung Seang, who retires on May 5.
State Local Government Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said the decision was made by the executive council yesterday.
He said Rajendran's swearing-in ceremony would be held after May 5.
"We wish (Datuk) Yew all the best in his endeavours.
"I have to nevertheless remind the incoming mayor that work is always ongoing and we cannot take anything lightly and rest on our laurels as we must ensure the vision of Penang is delivered.
"It is hoped councillors and agencies will ensure our new mayor's efforts towards this vision will be materalised in line with the state's vision."
Rajendran spent 37 years as a MBPP officer and is familiar with its workings, having overseen many projects and redesigning of road systems on the island.
He said his first task would be to ease traffic congestion on Penang island.
He said he also hoped to increase the people's social participation.
"I know I will face many challenges, but I promise to do my best and provide better services to the people of Penang."
He expressed his gratitude to the Penang government, particularly Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and Jagdeep, for giving him a chance to become the fourth mayor of Penang.
