KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry today denied allegations made by Puchong member of parliament Yeo Bee Yin on the construction costs of a classroom amounting to RM2.6 million.
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the statement made by Yeo was inaccurate as each project under the ministry was evaluated and reviewed based on specific procedures and standards set by the government.
"I feel that the statement was inaccurate. We have our work processes where every project is reviewed based on the standard given.
"(And) we want to stress that the work processes need to follow a certain scope, with a consultant and specific work standard in order for the ministry to continue the project," she told reporters after an event today.
Last week, Yeo told the Dewan Rakyat that the average cost of classroom construction ranged between RM1.8 million to RM2.6 million.
She also urged the government to review the contractors' appointment process for the construction of national schools and maintenance of primary schools, noting that the cost for one classroom was equivalent to a luxury condominium and semi-detached homes.
