SERDANG: Health Minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa urged people with heatstroke symptoms to go to hospitals for treatment.
She said one of the severe symptoms of heatstroke is dehydration which can affect internal organs.
However, she reassured that the current situation is under control.
Zaliha said the government was working closely with other agencies to further monitor hotspots with hot and dry weather.
"We are collaborating with the Meteorological Department to identify the hotspots.
"We would also continuously discuss with the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) and other agencies to get the latest developments," she told reporters during the Health Ministry's Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration here today.
She said the government was taking all measures to prevent future heatstroke cases, and that it closely monitored patients with heatstroke symptoms such as fatigue and dehydration who are seeking treatment at government health facilities.
She said in dealing with the El Nino phenomenon, the government will also have meetings with the state health departments to be constantly updated with the current weather and other developments.
"If there is any emergency outbreak (of heastroke cases), we are prepared as we follow all necessary procedures."
Also present at the Aidilfitri event were Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek.
On April 29, the Health Ministry sounded the alarm over the prevailing hot weather that is set to be followed by the El Nino phenomenon this month, which will signal hot and dry conditions.
The ministry also prohibited any outdoor activities in areas with Air Pollution Index readings above 100 and advised people to stay hydrated to regulate their body temperature.
