Two sisters killed in car-oil tanker crash in Kuantan

KUANTAN: Two sisters were killed in a vehicle crash after the Proton Wira they were travelling in was hit by an oil tanker near a traffic light junction at Felda Lepar Hilir, along Jalan Kuantan-Segamat here, yesterday.

The car driver, Siti Nur Alia Saffiyah Zulkifli, 18, and her sister, Siti Mazurah Zulkifli, 30, died at the scene, while the 31-year-old lorry driver escaped unhurt during the 11pm incident.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Mohd Zahari Wan Busu said the lorry carrying petroleum was heading towards a petrol station in Gambang.

"Investigations revealed the lorry driver is believed to have lost control of the wheel resulting in the vehicle veering into the opposite lane before crashing into the car where the siblings were in.

"We have detained the culprit for questioning and urine checks conducted on him tested negative for drugs," he said.

Wan Zahari said the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving and causing deaths.

Pahang Fire and Rescue Department public relations officer Zulfadli Zakaria said the department were alerted about the incident about 11.21pm before 14 firemen from the Taman Tas and Indera Mahkota fire station were deployed to the scene.

He said firemen used special tools to bring the victims out of the mangled vehicle before handing their remains to the police.

The remains of both the siblings were taken to the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital for post mortem.
