Couple killed, son injured after car crashes into parked excavator in Kuantan

KUANTAN: A couple was killed while their 11-year-old son sustained serious injuries after the car they were travelling in crashed into an excavator at the 10th Mile of Jalan Kuantan-Maran here today.

Retired firemen Mohd Fadli Mohd Abidin, 42, and his teacher-wife Rohafiza Taha, 50, both from Kemaman, Terengganu succumbed to their injuries on the spot in the 2am accident.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Mohd Zahari Wan Busu said the accident involved Fadli's Mitsubishi Xpander and an excavator which was parked by the road side.

"Investigations revealed Fadli was driving from Gambang towards Kemaman and upon reaching the spot, he was believed to have lost control of the vehicle before crashing into an excavator parked on the road shoulder.

"Fadli and his wife died at the scene while their son who was seated in the rear passenger seat was taken by an ambulance to the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital here.

"The boy who passed out after the crash and suffered facial and head injuries. He is being treated at the hospital's red zone," he said in a statement today.

Wan Mohd Zahari said the case is investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Meanwhile, Pahang Fire and Rescue Department public relations officer Zulfadli Zakaria said eight firemen from the Taman Tas fire station were deployed to the accident scene.

"Firemen used rescue tools to extricate the driver and front seat passenger who were pinned in their seats. Passerby helped to bring out the couple's son before he was taken to hospital," he said.
