GEORGE TOWN: The Centre for Research on Women and Gender (KANITA) established by Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in 2001 as an excellence centre, is poised to become a research centre that can stand on its own.
Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister, Aiman Athirah Sabu, said the research centre can be an institution that will assist the Malaysia Madani government in achieving gender equality through various policies and instruments, including gender-inclusive policies.
"Gender-inclusive policies must be one of the strategies and tools to achieve gender equality, and we also need to develop a manual for this immediately.
"If KANITA can be independent, then our advocacy process and awareness campaigns will be much easier," she told reporters after delivering her keynote address at the Gender Equality: A Malaysia Madani Commitment event here earlier today (June 23).
Aiman Athirah said KANITA will also be an excellent body to assist the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry in making policies and efforts toward having a better understanding of gender-related issues. – Bernama
