Woman dies after botched breast enlargement procedure in Johor

JOHOR BARU: A mother of two died following a botched breast enlargement procedure which was conducted by a beautician at a house in Skudai near here.

Tan Wei Shan, 29, died on Aug 2, which was four days after she underwent the procedure at a double-storey house in Taman Mutiara Rini.

Her husband, who declined to be named, said that Tan died of an infection due to the side effects of the intrusive procedure.

Iskandar Puteri district police chief Assistant Commissioner Rahmat Ariffin confirmed today that the victim's husband lodged a police report on the day she died.

The man had told police that Tan underwent "beauty treatment" days before her death.

Rahmat said the treatment was conducted at a beauty treatment centre in Mutiara Rini.

However, police remained tight-lipped if the beautician operated from a house or a legitimate business centre, or if she was qualified to perform the procedure.

He said investigations were ongoing and asked the public not to make speculations.

Johor Health and Unity Committee chairman Ling Tian Soon visited the victim's family at their home in Taman Perling today.

He said the deceased's next-of-kin had told him that the procedure was conducted at a house, and not a beauty centre.

"The victim is said to have passed away after undergoing a beauty treatment at a centre operating within a residence."

He said no official complaint has yet to be lodged with the State Health Department.

However, he advised the family to file an official complaint with the department so that a thorough investigation could be conducted.

Ling said the case would be probed under Act 586 of the Health Care and Services Facilities Act 1998, which requires all private healthcare facilities and services including beauty treatment centres comply with standard operating procedures (SOP) and possess relevant professional licences.

The victim's husband, a 35-year-old businessman, has also taken to social media to describe the events which led to his wife's death.

He said Tan experienced dizziness and discomfort upon returning home after the intrusive procedure on July 29.

He said she complained of excruciating pain and experienced swelling in her chest.

He took her to a clinic the next day (July 30) when her condition deteriorated.

Tan was later rushed to a private hospital for urgent medical attention, which was recommended by the doctor at the clinic, he said.

She died at 7am on Aug 2, leaving behind her two children aged one and 12, said her husband.

He also said Tan had initially considered to undergo a facelift after she became acquainted with the beautician through a mutual friend four months ago.

He said in the same social media post that his wife was unaware that the beautician allegedly did not have the necessary licence and medical qualifications.

He went on to say that Tan had concerns about the breast enhancement procedure, and that she initially changed her mind about it.

He alleged that the beautician told his wife that she could not cancel the procedure because the necessary equipment and silicone pads had been purchased.
