Person with disabilities defies odds to participate in state election

KOTA BARU: In a display of unwavering determination, a person with disabilities (PwD) has defied physical limitations to participate in the state election.

Mohd Saiful Fahmi Yaakub, 36, born with a disability, ventured out with his family to exercise his voting rights.

Accompanied by his father Yaakub Harun, 63, elder brother Mohd Adli, 39, and younger sister Khadijah Farhana, 33, Fahmi, who is mute and moves using a wheelchair, enthusiastically engaged in the voting process.

"Since early morning, he has been ready to cast his vote, avoiding the crowds. I am grateful for the priority and assistance provided by the Election Commission personnel at the polling station," Yaakub said.

He said Fahmi, the second of five siblings, has never missed a vote since becoming eligible as a registered voter.

"Despite the challenges, we are committed to ensuring he reaches the polling center. His determination to participate fills us with immense pride," said Yaakub.

He shared that his second son out of five children has never failed to vote since he became an eligible voter.

When asked about his voting experience, Saiful responded with an enthusiastic nod and a broad smile.

Meanwhile, another person with disabilities, Normazni Mohd Sharipudin, 40, who is hearing impaired and mute, shared her fourth voting experience.

Employed at a recycling centre, she expressed her hope for elected leaders who champion the rights and well-being of all citizens, including those with special needs like herself and her husband, Mohd Badrul Shahlan Ahmad, 29.

"We require support and assistance, such as vouchers for essential items and groceries," Normazni explained. She currently receives RM450 monthly from the welfare department.
