TAMPIN: A woman lost consciousness after dipping her finger in ink to vote at the Sekolah Kebangsaan Rokan polling centre in Gemencheh, here, before being confirmed dead this morning.
It is understood that in the incident around 10.30am, the 83-year-old victim was initially treated after the incident but her oxygen levels were found to be declining.
Tampin district police chief, Superintendent Anuwal Ab Wahab, said that around 11am today, the police received information from a health assistant at Gemencheh Health Clinic, informing that a woman had been confirmed dead at the clinic.
"Initial investigations found that the woman went to SK Rokan to vote with family members. While at channel one, after dipping her finger in ink, the deceased suddenly fell and lost consciousness," he said in a statement today.
He said that the woman was then taken by family members to Gemencheh Health Clinic.
"The deceased regained consciousness but her oxygen levels were falling. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was performed by the assistant medical officer, but it was unsuccessful in saving her.
"Before the incident, the 83-year-old woman complained to her family that she had been experiencing pain in her leg since returning from performing Umrah.
"When she arrived at the polling place, the deceased was said to have walked from the car to channel one on foot. There is a medical record indicating that this woman was a high blood pressure patient," he said.
Anuwal said that the cause of death was confirmed by the attending medical officer before the body was sent to Tampin Hospital's Forensic Unit for a post-mortem examination.
"The case has been classified as sudden death," he said.
