EC set Oct 7 as polling day for Pelangai by-election

PUTRAJAYA: The Election Commission (EC) has set Oct 7 as the polling day for the Pelangai state seat by-election in Pahang.

Its chairman Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh also announced Sept 23 as the nomination of candidates and Oct 3 for early voting.

Campaigning for the by-election will run for 14 days, from the start of the nomination day until 11.59pm on Oct 6.

"An allocation of RM2.1 million is needed to carry out the Pelangai by-election," said Abdul Ghani after chairing a special meeting on the by-election here, today.

He said the May 2023 Supplementary Electoral Roll, which was updated as of Aug 17 this year, will be used for the by-election and that they will be sold starting Sept 18.

Pelangai, which is one of the four seats under the Bentong parliamentary constituency, has 16,456 eligible registered voters.

Of the total, 16,417 are ordinary registered voters, 36 members of the police force and three absentee voters abroad.

"For the purpose of conducting the Pelangai by-election, the EC has appointed one returning officer (RO) who will be assisted by three assistant ROs," he said.

Bentong district officer Datuk Mohammad Shahid Ismail is the RO for the Pelangai state seat by-election.

"The EC will also set-up two election campaign enforcement teams comprising the police, local authorities as well as representatives of candidates contesting in the polls," he said.

Abdul Ghani added that a total of 312 election workers will be appointed to manage the by-election in Pelangai state seat, which comprises nine voting centres and 30 polling streams including one early voting centre and early polling stream.

The Pelangai by-election is the third by-election to be held in the country after the Aug 12 state elections.

The other two are the by-elections for the Pulai parliamentary constituency and Simpang Jeram state seat in Johor, which will go to the polls on Sept 9.

Pelangai became vacant after its assemblyman Datuk Seri Johari Harun was killed in the Elmina plane crash on Aug 17.

Johari, who was the state local government, housing, environment and green technology committee chairman and Bentong Umno chief, was 53.

In the 15th general election (GE15) last year, Johari of Barisan Nasional (BN) won Pelangai after he polled 7,308 votes, defeating three other contenders for the state seat.
