PM: Government aid can't be distributed under political party's name, logo

JOHOR BARU: The distribution of government aid to the people can't be made under the name or logo of political parties.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said government aid must be distributed in the name of the government.

He said all parties need to adhere to the campaign ethics and respect the rules set by the Election Commission (EC) during the campaign period for the Pulai and Simpang Jeram by-elections.

"On the campaign ethics and distribution of government aid, I have discussed with Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi to make sure there is no breach, we respect the rules set by EC.

"Secondly, there is an issue arising regarding government aid to the people that use party logo, which is not allowed.

This has been practised by the previous Perikatan Nasional government and happened once or twice in the unity government and our instruction is that this is not allowed. Government aid must be distributed under the government's name," said Anwar after attending a Kenduri Rakyat and the presentation of Bakul Rahamah aid in Dataran Taman Dahlia in Kemaps here.

Also present were Onn Hafiz and Domestic Trade and Cost of Living deputy minister Fuziah Salleh.

At the event, Anwar symbolically presented Bakul Rahmah aid to 10 residents of Taman Dahlia.

Earlier in his speech, Anwar said the efforts of the late Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub in introducing the Payung Rahmah initiatives have clearly help reduced the people's burden.

"This government is always thinking (about initiatives that benefit the people) not to fight, insult people or incite fights among the races or parties.

"We are carrying out the trust. For example, Salahuddin was in politics for a long time but when he was given the post, his focus was on the work and responsibility to reduce the pressure of the cost of living, may his example be continued so that the government will be strengthened in serving the people," said Anwar.

The nomination for the Pulai parliamentary and Simpang Jeram state seats have been set for August 26 while the early voting and polling date have been set for September 5 and 9 respectively.
