Bidding opens for M____M number plates: Celebrating Malaysia Merdeka in style [UPDATED]

PUTRAJAYA: The Road Transport Department (RTD) has announced the commencement of bidding tenders for exclusive registration numbers featuring the distinctive M prefix and suffix.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke unveiled the M____M series of number plates, a symbolic tribute to Malaysia Merdeka, marking the nation's 66th Independence Day celebrations.

This unique series marks a historic first, as the RTD introduces the same alphabet at the beginning and end of a licence plate, Loke added.

"There was an M for Melaka registration plates. For this occasion, we added another M (suffix).

"The presence of the double M signifies the essence of Malaysia Merdeka or even Malaysia Madani," Loke explained, underscoring the series' dual significance in commemorating this momentous occasion.

Prospective bidders interested in owning these special number plates can participate through JPJebid from Aug 31 until Sept 4.

The results will be known on Sept 5.

Loke said the auction will feature varying starting prices for different categories of numbers.

Golden numbers, considered the most sought-after, will initiate bidding at RM20,000.

Those desiring attractive numbers can bid from RM3,000, while popular numbers can be secured from RM800.

For those seeking running numbers, the entry point starts at a modest RM300.

Loke said successful bids must be registered to a vehicle within 12 months of the official results.

He hoped the bidding would generate as much revenue as possible for the government.

The previous bidding for 'FF' series number plates, he said, garnered RM34 million.
