Man losses RM210,000 to non-existent vehicle number plate

SEGAMAT: Police arrested a man for allegedly cheating a businessman out of RM210,000 for a bogus vehicle-registration number, yesterday.

District police chief Superintendent Ahmad Zamry Marinsah said the suspect in custody has been remanded for four days to facilitate investigations under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

A businessman lost RM210,000 to the suspect who allegedly promised him to secure a special number plate, believed to be one of the recently released by the Transport Ministry in conjunction with the nation's 66th Independence Day celebrations.

Ahmad Zamry said the victim lodged a police report after he realised that he was scammed by the suspect.

Based on the report, the victim claimed he had banked-in the RM210,000 in stages to the suspect's bank account, in order to secure the special plate number.

However, police investigations revealed that the alleged scammer did not have any plate number secured nor did he have the authority to do so.

Ahmad Zamry advised members of the public to exercise caution when banking in large amounts to strangers.

He reminded those wanting to secure any vehicle registration numbers to go through proper channels such as the Road Transport Department or any registered companies, after conducting due diligence on the company's background.

"When it's too good to be true, it usually isn't," he said, adding it's better to be safe than sorry.
