KOTA BARU: The Kelantan Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) has admitted that the state has been facing a shortage of eggs since three months ago.
Kelantan KPDN director Azman Ismail said they were monitoring the issue and situation before taking appropriate action.
"For the supply of eggs, we get it from Melaka and Johor. We admit there is a shortage in the supply of Grade A, B and C eggs in the state for the past three months, although there is no issue or problem for Omega eggs.
"So far, we have not received any word or news as to what is the cause of the problem faced by suppliers and such a matter falls under the purview and jurisdiction of the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry.
"In Kelantan, there are places where there is supply, and there are other places where the supply has been limited. For example at the Mydin Hypermarket 2,000 trays of eggs were ordered but only 500 trays of eggs were received," he said when contacted today.
However he said that so far they have not received any complaints or reports of sellers raising the prices of eggs following the supply shortage.
"We hope that no one tries to manipulate or take advantage of the situation by raising the price of eggs," he said.
Earlier, it was reported that the supply of eggs in Kelantan was low for more than a month following wholesalers only receiving limited supplies from the farmers.
Checks at the Tunjong Rural Transformation Centre (RTC) revealed that the supply of eggs had run out while stocks were limited at the wholesaler on Jalan Kuala Krai here.
Egg wholesaler Rosmina Abdul Razak, 48, said there has been a shortage in the supply of eggs since a month ago and it became worse two weeks ago because it is believed there was a shortage from the farms.
The prices have remained the same which are RM13.50 for Grade A, RM12.90 for Grade B and RM12.30 for Grade C.
