KOTA BARU: An enforcement officer from a government agency was among six people arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission on suspicision of soliciting and accepting monthly bribes of up to RM10,000 from suspected smugglers.
It is learnt that all suspects, in their 50s, were detained separately when they were summoned to have their statements recorded at the state MACC headquarters between 2pm and 5pm yesterday.
Sources familiar with investigations into the case said the suspects were allegedly asked and received monthly bribes of between RM5,000 to RM10,000 from suspected smugglers.
Sources said the bribes were inducement to not take action against those who were involved in the smuggling of cooking oil and other government-subsidised items as well as contrabands.
The MACC has also obtained remand orders against all suspects to facilitate investigation into the case under Section 17 (a) of the MACC Act 2009.
Magistrate Ahmad Syafiq Aizat Nazri granted the MACC application to remand all suspects for five days until Sept 7.
