Elmina air crash: Pilot had 36 hours of flight time on plane model that crashed

KUALA LUMPUR: The 41-year old Pilot-in-Command (PIC) of the doomed Hawker Beechcraft 390 which crashed moments before it was to land at the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport, Subang, had clocked a total of 6,275 hours of flying time during his career.

However, Shahrul Kamal Roslan had only done 36.72 hours of flight time on that particular type of aircraft which crashed at Bandar Elmina, Shah Alam on Aug 17.

The airplane- operated by Jet Valet Sdn Bhd that had earlier departed the Langkawi International Airport- was destroyed following the ground impact and subsequent fire.

The second in command of the plane was 44-year old Heikal Aras Abdul Azim.

A preliminary finding of the crash released today showed that he had clocked a total of 9,298 flying hours, with 3.15 hours on that type of aircraft, and is not rated on the RA-390S aircraft, which is the Beechcraft Model 390 (Premier 1).

An aircraft rating is a flight crew qualification that allows the pilot to operate a particular aircraft.

On Aug 17, 10 people were killed when a private jet, which was flying from Langkawi to Subang, crashed on the Guthrie Expressway at Bandar Elmina, moments before landing.

The victims were six passengers, including Pahang's Pelangai state assemblyman Datuk Seri Johari Harun, two pilots and two motorists on the ground who were struck by the crashing aircraft.

Details of the plane - with the call sign N28JV, showed that it was manufactured by the Raytheon Aircraft Company in 2004.

It was registered as N6197F but was subsequently exported to and registered with the United Kingdom as G-FRYL and deregistered in the United States.

In April of 2023, the airplane was deregistered in the United Kingdom and registered in the United States as N28JV.

It was issued a Standard Airworthiness Certificate with the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) on May 10, 2023 and arrived in Malaysia on May 16 after departing Germany on May 10.

The plane was owned by Koperasi Amanah Pelaburan Berhad (KAPB) and had a certificate of Airworthiness which was due to expire in April next year.
