Airbnb removes homestay operator alleged to have installed hidden camera

KUALA LUMPUR: Airbnb's security team has suspended the account of the homestay operator alleged to have installed a hidden camera, pending an investigation.

This is after foreign tourists claimed they had found a hidden camera installed in the socket of their accommodation.

Airbnb India, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and Taiwan general manager Amanpreet Bajaj said such actions were prohibited and he was disappointed to hear that such an incident had occured.

"Although incidents involving security rarely happen on Airbnb premises, we take such reports seriously, and we have provided support to our guests," he stated in an email to Bernama.

Bajaj was commenting on a report last Sunday, which the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry said it was taking the allegations seriously.

Its minister, Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing was reported to have said that the Sabah state government, the ministry and related agencies had been ordered to take strict action.

The incident initially came to light on the Shanghai-based Xiaohongshu social media platform on Sept 14 before being shared by a local news portal.
