JOHOR BARU: A jewellery shop worker was arrested for theft after being caught stealing a gold ring on a CCTV camera he was tasked by his employer to install.

Johor Baru Selatan police chief, Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat, said a review of the CCTV footage led police to identify the 41-year-old suspect.

"The incident happened on Nov 16. The suspect was instructed to install the CCTV, but footage from the camera revealed that he had stolen a 16.01-gram gold ring worth RM5,814.32.

"The suspect then pawned the ring for RM4,950," he said in a statement.

Raub added that the suspect was arrested in Ulu Tiram, where police also recovered a letter from a pawnshop.

The suspect, who has no prior criminal record, has been remanded for four days.
