KUALA LUMPUR: The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has recalled two Malaysia-made mooncakes due to the detection of high levels of bacteria that could potentially lead to food poisoning.
The two are Joymom Musang King snowskin mooncake and Fragrance single yolk lotus paste baked mooncake.
The agency has directed the respective importers, Taste Right Pte Ltd and Fragrance Foodstuff Pte Ltd to recall the products.
The expiry date of the Joymom Musang King snowskin mooncake is listed as March 5, 2024, and the Fragrance single yolk lotus paste baked mooncake expires on Oct 20 this year.
"SFA has detected Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) in Joymom's Musang King snowskin mooncake, and aflatoxins in Fragrance's single yolk lotus paste baked mooncake, both at levels exceeding the maximum limits stipulated in Singapore's food regulations," said the agency in a statement yesterday.
SFA said S. aureus, which is a common cause of food poisoning is usually found in the environment and also on the skin or in the noses of people.
Foodborne pathogens like S. aureus can be introduced during the production process when cross-contamination occurs, particularly when good hand hygiene is not practised.
Aflatoxins can occur in foods as a result of fungal contamination. It is also known to be genotoxic and carcinogenic.
The SFA recommends that individuals who have bought the mooncakes in question to refrain from consuming them.
Those who have already consumed the implicated products and have health-related concerns are advised to seek medical advice.
