MetMalaysia: Weak quake in Sabah; continuous rain in the Peninsular

KUALA LUMPUR: A weak earthquake with a magnitude of 3.6 on the Richter scale was detected in the waters of eastern Sabah at 2.38pm today.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) said the epicentre of the earthquake was at 7.0-degree north and 117.8-degree east, with a depth of 67 kilometers (km).

The tremor was detected 331km south from Palawan, Philippines and 81km northeast of Pitas, Sabah.

"There is no tsunami threat to Malaysia and MetMalaysia will continue to monitor this situation," the department said in a statement on Facebook today.

Meanwhile, in a separate statement, MetMalaysia also issued a warning of continuous rain at alert level in Perlis, Kedah and Penang for a period of two days starting tomorrow until Thursday.

"Continuous rain warning is issued when there are signs that rain or thunderstorms are or expected to occur for more than six hours in the relevant period in an area," he said.

Warnings of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds were issued in the Peninsular and Sarawak states until 8pm tonight.

MetMalaysia said the wet weather forecast is expected to occur in Perak which involves Hilir Perak, Batang Padang and Muallim as well as Terengganu in the areas of Besut, Setiu, Dungun and Kemaman.

"Also facing the same weather are Kelantan, Pahang in Raub, Bentong, Temerloh, Bera and Rompin areas as well as Selangor involving Sabak Bernam, Hulu Selangor and Hulu Langat.

"The other affected areas are Jelebu and Jempol in Negri Sembilan, Segamat and Mersing in Johor, while Sabah in Sandakan involves the areas of Tongod, Telupid and Beluran," the statement added.
