Perak Sultan retains Deputy Agong role for second term

KUALA LUMPUR: The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, has been re-elected as the Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong. 

He will work alongside the newly elected 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, the Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Almarhum Sultan Iskandar.

Their service is set to commence on Jan 31, next year.

Born on Nov 27, 1956, in Georgetown, Penang, Sultan Nazrin is the eldest son of Almarhum Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah Al-Maghfurlah (34th Sultan of Perak) and Tuanku Siti Bainun Mohd Ali.

Following his father's passing on May 28, 2014, Sultan Nazrin was proclaimed the 35th Sultan of Perak, assuming the title Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah. 

His official enthronement took place about a year later, on May 6, 2015.

Sultan Nazrin holds a B.A. (Hons) in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from Oxford University; a Master in Public Administration from the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University; and a Ph.D. in Political Economy and Government from Harvard University.

Besides his constitutional obligations, Sultan Nazrin also holds significant international roles, which include being the co-chair of the United Nations High-Level Panel on Humanitarian Financing in 2015 and acting as Malaysia's Special Envoy for Interfaith and Inter-civilisational Dialogue at the United Nations Alliance of Civilisations (UNAOC).

He is also the University Malaya chancellor and the Colonel-in-Chief for both the Regiment of Royal Engineers and the Royal Medical Corps within the Malaysian Armed Forces.

Sultan Nazrin is married to Tuanku Zara Salim and had a son Raja Azlan Muzzaffar Shah, and a daughter, Raja Nazira Safya.
