KLUANG: Flash floods caused by the northeast monsoon caused damage at 37 identified locations including 29 roads and eight landslides in Kluang, Mersing and Kota Tinggi respectively.
Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said RM30 million is needed to carry on repair works at the identified damaged sites.
Kluang recorded the highest number of road damages and landslides, followed by Kota Tinggi and Mersing.
There were four landslides reported in Kluang namely along Jalan Kluang-Kota Tinggi and at Jalan Padang Tembak.
While, two landslide sites were reported in Mersing, at Felda Tenggaroh 3 and Jalan Johor Baru-Kuantan.
"However, the repair works which is expected to be carried out immediately is currently hindered by the unpredictable weather conditions," Ahmad said.
He added for temporary measures to prevent further soil erosion and to contain the slopes, commercial-grade canvas are used, before permanent retainers are to be installed.
Earlier, Ahmad Maslan inspected the landslides and flood-damaged roads at Section 71-74, FT050 of Jalan Kluang-Mersing, here.
"The Works Ministry observes a standard operating procedure, -when roads are damaged by floods, the pothole are resurfaced within 24 hours.
"However, road repairs are weather-dependent. If the rain subsides, repair works will be initiated immediately.
But in the case of heavy rainfall, the repairs will not yield effective results," he said.
He added last year about 5,000 potholed federal roads were patched within the 24-hour timeframe.
The flood situation in Johor, had declined yesterday, with the number of victims seeking shelter at relief centres had reduced, and a few centres were closed.
However, since 4am today, continuous heavy downpour caused almost all low-lying and flood-prone areas in the 10 districts in the state to experience flash-floods.
The Meteorology Department contributed the floods due to the northeast monsoon effect, which was forecast to end today.
