Five vehicles damaged after two trees uprooted in Penang

GEORGE TOWN: A Perodua Myvi was badly damaged when two trees on Jalan Macalister here were uprooted this morning following heavy rain.

Four other cars were also damaged in the incident.

Bagan Jermal Fire and Rescue Station operations commander Nazril Hisyam Napiah said he received a call at 10.01am about the fallen trees.

Eight firemen arrived at the location 15 minutes later.

"Upon arriving at the location, two trees were found lying across the road, one of which had fallen on the parking area of a nearby building.

"The tree damaged five vehicles and the building fence was also damaged," he said when met here today.

Fortunately,  no one was injured in the incident.

The owner of one of the damaged cars, Annie Chua said she was thankful that the incident happened just minutes after she had got out of the vehicle.

Chua and several other car owners had just parked their vehicles to go to a restaurant nearby.

"While inside the restaurant, I heard a loud sound followed by shouting.

"Fortunately, we  had just entered the restaurant or we would have been victims," she said.

The incident also caused damage to Karen Lo's Cherry Omoda which she had just purchased two weeks ago.

"Following the rain I stopped here to have breakfast at a restaurant when I heard a loud noise.

"My newly purchased car has some damage to the mirrors," she said.

A spokesman from the Civil Defence Force (APM) said clearing works are ongoing, together with the police, the Fire and Rescue Department and Penang Island City Council.

The stretch was temporarily closed to traffic and comes days after a man was killed after an uprooted tree fell on his car on Jalan Sultan Ismail, Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday.

In the incident, two victims were extricated from their vehicles by firefighters.

The deceased, a 47-year-old male, was confirmed dead by paramedics at the scene.

The second victim, a 26-year-old male who sustained injuries, was taken to hospital.

Meanwhile, heavy rain since 4.30am today also resulted in Sungai Chenaam in Nibong Tebal to be inundated.

According to the APM, 30 houses were affected. However, there was no evacuation.

Flood waters receded at about 9.30am.
