IPOH: The trailer transporting a load of sugar, which was involved in a fatal accident with six other vehicles on the North-South Highway, heading north of the Gopeng-Simpang Pulai route today, was found to have two records of traffic summons.
After reviewing the previous summons records, Ipoh police chief Assistant Commissioner Yahaya Hassan confirmed the details concerning the Hino trailer, which was driven by a local man.
He said the preliminary investigation also revealed that the accident occurred after the Hino trailer driver lost control, veering into the opposite lane, and colliding with another Volvo trailer transporting iron hoops.
"As a result of the collision, the two trailer drivers died at the scene. At the time of the incident, the two trailers were also found not to have a co-driver," he said in a statement today.
In addition to the two trailers, Yahaya said the crash also involved another trailer, two multi-purpose vehicles (MPV), and two sedans.
"Another victim who was in one of the vehicles involved in the accident was reported to have sustained injuries. The injured and the two deceased trailer drivers were taken to a nearby hospital," he said.
He also said the case is being investigated in accordance with Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Witnesses are urged to come forward to assist in the investigation by contacting the district Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Division head, Deputy Superintendent Koo Boon Kuat, at 016-4173222.
It is understood that 13 victims, aged between seven and 65, were involved in the seven-vehicle pileup, which resulted in two deaths and a broken arm, while the other 10 escaped unharmed.
