ALOR STAR: Kedah Umno has joined the party's rank in condemning DAP veteran Tony Pua over his recent comments on the Pardons Board's decision to reduce the prison sentence and fine imposed on former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
Its Information chief Datuk Shaiful Hazizy Zainol Abidin called on DAP to take stern action against Pua for committing treason against Yang di-Pertuan Agong by questioning the board's decision.
Shaiful said as a seasoned politician, Pua should have been well aware of the royal pardon's concept, which falls under the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's prerogative.
"Pua's actions as a DAP member are highly unreasonable. Such disrespectful and uncivilised behaviour from a component party leader of the unity government is unacceptable.
"These baseless statements clearly show that Pua either does not understand the Federal Constitution or is completely unconstitutional.
"For the sake of unity government and the good cooperation between Umno and DAP, DAP needs to take decisive action against Pua because if individuals like him are left unchecked, they will continue to hinder this cooperation," he said in a statement today.
Shaiful said Pua's remarks were typical political manoeuvres aimed at regaining publicity through cheap statements.
Hence, he advised Pua to realise that he no longer has a place in the national political arena.
"Even in his own party elections, Pua lost in all contested positions. 'Apa cerita' (What is happening)?!
"My special message to Pua, stop being a thorn in the side or a wolf in sheep's clothing to the unity government. If you disagree with this coalition, be a man and leave the party. There's no need for such immature behaviour," he said.
Shaiful added that Pua needed to abandon DAP's old political tactics of trying to sow seeds of hatred against the royal institution.
"Such extremist approaches are no longer accepted by the people. The people are becoming more rational and wise. Remember that, Tony Pua!" he added.
Earlier today, Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail has asked Pua to issue an apology and delete all his social media posts or face legal action following his recent comments on the Pardons Board's decision.
He said that in the midst of Umno's grief, Pua's actions, issuing insolent statements through several posts on his Facebook, mocking the Pardons Board's decision on Najib; clearly insulting the country's legal system.
Yesterday, Pua, who is also a former Petaling Jaya member of parliament, had uploaded several posts on his Facebook after the Pardons Board's decision on Najib.
The board decided to halve Najib's prison sentence from 12 to six years, and the fine was reduced from RM210 million to RM50 million.
Najib was sentenced to 12 years in prison and fined RM210 million after being found guilty of abuse of power, breach of trust and money laundering involving RM42 million from SRC International, a former subsidiary of 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).
