Wee hails SST exemption for TCM as 'people's victory'

KUALA LUMPUR: The government's decision to exempt traditional and complementary medicine (TCM) from the sales and service tax (SST) has been hailed as the people's victory by MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

The former transport minister said in a social media post that he is grateful that his fight to get the SST exemption for TCM had succeeded.

"People's victory. Finally, what I suggested has been answered," he wrote in his post.

Wee said the SST exemption was not only for traditional Chinese, Malay and Indian medicine, but also for homeopathy, chiropractic, osteopathy and Islamic medicine.

"Thank you to the government, especially the Ministry of Finance, for listening to the people's complaints," he said.

Wee said he first raised the issue on Dec 29 and again on Jan 4.

"Today I am very happy because the government finally listened to the voice of the people," he added.

Wee said his oral question to the Dewan Rakyat on Feb 7 on TCM tax exemption had been answered earlier than expected.

The Finance Ministry today announced that TCM and alternative medicine would be exempt from the 8 per cent SST.
