Tragedy strikes: Eight-year-old girl's toes caught in escalator at shopping mall

KUALA LUMPUR: An eight-year-old girl's day out at a shopping mall with her mother turned tragic when her toes became stuck in an escalator in Setapak earlier today.

In the 4.45pm incident, three of the girl's toes were injured, including one of which was also fractured.

A video of the incident allegedly recorded at Setapak Sentral which shows the young girl being comforted by her mother while firemen try to free her leg, has since gone viral on social media.

A City Fire and Rescue Department spokesperson said the Kuala Lumpur Operations Centre received an emergency call at 4.56pm before a team of firemen from Setapak station were rushed to the scene.

Upon arriving at the mall, the five-member squad, lead by PBK Operations Commander II Shamsul Bahri Hashim, immediately began working to free the girl's jammed foot from the escalator.

"The firemen together with the building management took about 30 to 40 minutes to successfully free her leg," he said.

He added that the injured girl was surrendered to the medical team who was also on standby to provide emergency treatment at the scene.

"Preliminary information obtained showed that one of her toes was fractured while two more were injured," he said.
