Puad slams immigration union over criticisms of Johor MB

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno's Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi has ripped into the Immigration Services Union of Peninsular Malaysia over its criticism of Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi's surprise visits to border checkpoints in the state.

Puad said union president Ajeet Singh Gurbax Singh's remarks reeked of a "denial syndrome" and a "Little Napoleon" mentality.

Yesterday, Ajeet said while Onn Hafiz's frequent checks on border checkpoints were commendable, the menteri besar should also look into other issues affecting Johoreans.

He said there were rural villages which Onn had yet to visit.

This came after Onn Hafiz expressed disappointment when 13 counters at the car lane at the Johor Causeway were not opened to the public, causing congestion.

"Asking the Johor Menteri Besar to divert attention to other matters reflects a narrow-minded approach that is unfit for a civilised nation," said Puad, an Umno Supreme Council member.

Puad said the focus should be on finding ways to resolve the congestion at the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) and Sultan Abu Bakar Complex (KSAB) border checkpoints.

"It must be addressed so that not only are officials relieved of the burden, but also the public is spared from the congestion at the checkpoints," he said in a Facebook post.

The congestion issues can impact Johor and Malaysia's economy, he said.

Puad said the issue also affects Singaporeans who have invested in Singapore.

The Rengit assemblyman also said the changing of shifts of immigration officers, cited by Ajeet, should not be used as an excuse for the congestion.

"The fact that Johor Menteri Besar has visited the BSI and CIQ complex, both early mornings and after dawn, demonstrates his commitment to resolving the issue."
