Health Ministry to investigate man's claims of 'heavy bleeding' after hospital treatment

KUALA LUMPUR: The Health Ministry will investigate an incident at Cyberjaya Hospital where a patient reported 'heavy bleeding' after a urinary catheter removal procedure.

Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, in a brief reply last night, said, "The ministry will investigate this further to address any allegations of negligence, ensuring that such claims from the patient's side are properly handled."

Earlier, a patient reported bleeding after a urinary catheter removal procedure while seeking treatment at the hospital.

In a Facebook post, Zaslan Zeeha Zainee shared a photo of his adult diaper completely soaked in blood.

He claimed that the urinary catheter was removed forcefully, causing him to bleed and in pain.

Meanwhile, Cyberjaya Hospital director Dr Shahabuddin Ibrahim, in a statement, said the patient was admitted on March 27 due to dengue fever.

"The patient was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) for closer monitoring and had a urinary catheter inserted to monitor hydration levels closely."

He said the patient's condition had stabilised, and was moved to the normal ward on March 28 and underwent the urinary catheter removal procedure.

"During the removal procedure, the staff in charge encountered difficulty and called for a medical officer to perform the procedure.

"The medical officer successfully removed the catheter without any bleeding. However, an hour after its removal, the patient reported bleeding."

Subsequently, a doctor from the surgery department was promptly called to evaluate the situation and concluded that no specific intervention was necessary, directing continuous monitoring instead.

"The patient remained stable, with blood tests showing no signs of blood loss and stable platelet levels. Current urine output also indicated no further bleeding."

A team comprising doctors and nurses then met with the patient and family to provide explanations and apologies for the unpleasant experience.

The patient will continue to be monitored and is expected to be discharged over the weekend.

The hospital reaffirms its commitment to improving healthcare delivery to the public, welcoming any suggestions for improvement.
